Windows 2K install on AMD chipset a no go

I have a AMD 1.4GHz chipset sitting on a ABIT motherboard with the latest BIOS update and a 512MB DDR memory chip.

I can't install Windows2K. It gets just a little ways in and then locks up.

I have Windows 98SE on it now, but it keeps spontaiously rebooting. Not sure if this is a hardware issue or software issue but I am at my wits end and ready to chuck the thing and get a Intel chipset and motherboard which I have never had problems with before.

I support Linux, and PHP, and would love to support AMD, but if it don't work, it don't do me any good.

So.
1. Any ideas why I am getting spontaious reboots with win98se and.

Any ideas how to get Win2K installed which I am hoping can avoid that problem.

what you might find, is that it is the BIOS setting, reason a say this is because i have had the same problem installing my Athlon 2000XP.
I thought with my processor being a high performance chip i should set the bios for High Performance (silly me) this is only used when you want to over clock your system thus making it very unstable.

what i had to do was to reset the bios to default settings abd manually change the FSB Speed from 100 to 133 and change tolerance setting to disable (its usually set to .25+-), save the settings and reboot your system should now be stable and able to install any operating system you want.

I believe that this is more of a hardware issue.

Most likely your CPU is overheating and in order to save itself it is rebooting or shutting down your computer.

Make sure you do not have your CPU fan on backwards, as this is about 95% of the reasons why they keep rebooting (after you change cpu/motherboards. (Well it has been in my friends cases)

If it starts to lock up part way through the install:

Go into your BIOS and check the temp readings - if looks ok and below 50-60 celcius then you can rule out the previous guy's post about the temp issue.

Change the BIOS settings to the default settings, make sure you are using the correct multiplier settings and the chip is posting at its default speed.

Try and run a scandisk or chkdsk on the drive you are installing to as it may be corrupted.

Do you get a blue screen stop message? If you have your critical data on another partition and dont mind wiping the C partition then you may want to format and install Win2k afterwards.

make sure u have the right bios - which MOBO and BIOS are u using by the way and which AMD chip have u got?

Do not upgrade to Win2k, always do a fresh install of it!!
While in the military I did well over 300 of these and learned my lesson early on. I run Win2k on all my machines, but if you try and upgrade instead of fresh install you will run into all sorts of problems. The first being, it doesn't want to overwrite SE or ME. This is just from my experiences. Your mileage may vary.

No you wont necessarily run into problems upgrading from 98 to Win2K however if you have problems in the first place then like I said before you might want to move critical data to a different partition(if you have one) and then do a fresh install of win2k on your c partition.

The problem however is the fact that his install is freezing and thats what we are trying to sort out here.

I had similar problems installing 98. It was about a year ago, so the details are a bit sketchy, but it was either MS or AMD who had a download to run before installing windows. This fixed it and it ran perfectly after that.

Try searching AMD.com for the fix.
