How can I protect files that contain php code to edit ?
is there any free programs to do that ?
Check out the Zend engine. You can compile your scripts but then anyone that runs them would have to have Zend installed.
That would probally be the Zend Encoder and it's a Free Trial to members. So you will need to sign up with them before hand. If you want to purchase the product it's $960 for a one year license or $2400 for a perpetual license
Try PHPGuardian (http://www.phpguardian.com)
I think it is a better and much cheaper alternate to zend encoder.

If your scripts are modular, simply place most of the functions in include files with the .inc extension. then configure your web server to not allow .inc files to be visible from the web.
