Dynamic File Management

Forgive my ignorance as I am new to PHP, but I'm about to re-design my band's site and I'd like it to be fullly dynamic. I've noticed many sites utilize PHP/MySQL to achieve this with urls like www.mysite.com/whichPage.php?name=News and www.mysite.com/whichPage.php?name=Contact. It's like they create one base page to work from and the rest is dynamically generated.

This is a totally new concept to me so I have no idea where to start or if I'm asking the right question(s).

My point. I'd like to have an 'admin' area so others as well as myself can update news, add images, add shows, create new links, etc.

Where do I start?

Here is how you can achieve that URL style.

There is no admin interface to this, just ftp your files and they should work.

If you really want an admin interface, I suggest you go with content management systems like geeklog , postNuke, or phpNuke . 🙂

I was trying to install Geeklog for my site, but I am stuck with the installation process. I am sure I've set the config.php correctly, but I get the following error after step 2 of installation:

"error selecting database"

Can you help me, please? Let me know if you need more information.

You need to make sure your database name is correct.
Check your host for details:
It is usually called "localhost" or sometimes your username.

Hmm... i thought $dbhost = 'localhost' and $dbname = 'the name i gave it'

I am sure I've config.php set up correctly, however on the geeklog site, someone mentioned to set privileges for mysql.. something like grant all dbname.* something something identified by 'password'. Can someone tell me how to do this using phpMyAdmin?
