Code to Navigate Search Results

I'm trying to duplicate the sort of php coding generated by the Interakt module for Macromedia UltraDev.
It works neatly enough in UltraDev and I have use it in a beta version of a new non-fiction browser on the ACHUKA website:
http://www.achuka.co.uk/nonfic/php/nfbrowser.php

For several reasons, I would prefer not to have to use UltraDev/Interakt to generate the navigation bar showing the Go To Next Record, Go To Last Record arrows

I am fairly new to PHP/Mysql. Have got my head round SQL search coding but am having more difficulty getting PHP and echo statements to generate filtered results.

So I'd be very greateful if someone could direct me to in-built PHP functions or blocks of code that will help me out!
