Getting started - VERY newbie...

Hello,

Up to this point, I've been developing using ASP and Access, I'm now working
for a department that uses all the free stuff (PHP, MySQL).

My Newbie Question: I want to set up a test environment on my Windows 2000
professional workstation that would support MySQL databases, and run a small
PHP server. Can anyone outline the steps and websites that I could download
what I need to turn my desktop into a test server using these technologies?

Download the PHP and mySQL (and I assume Apache) windows binaries, they are simple to install and setup.

You will need to specify the types of file extensions to be parsed by the PHP engine inside of php.ini in order for it to run your scripts through PHP.

Also, you will need to setup your initial MySQL privileges and specify who can connect to it.

Check the documentation on www.php.net and www.mysql.com

Ok simple:

Download and install PHP:
http://ca.php.net/do_download.php?download_file=php-4.2.2-installer.exe

Download and Install MySQL version 3.23 (Stable):
http://www.mysql.com/Downloads/MySQL-3.23/mysql-3.23.52-win.zip

For ease of administration get phpMyAdmin to administer ur DBs:
http://www.phpmyadmin.net/index.php?dl=3

Ok i think that should get you started just fine 🙂
Actually thats all you need, now I am asuming that you already have Apache Installed and running 🙂

You can simplify your objective with an 'all-in-one' package.

I happened to use EasyPHP for developing because it is the first one I stumbed across. The index page and error log is in French, and there are a couple minor bugs, but it works fine for developing. Apache, MySQL and PhpMyAdmin are included, and installation was as simple as double-clicking on one file only. Clicking on the icon then starts all three servers if you don't install it to start at bootup.

Thanks to all so far. I should have mentioned that this is in conjunction with using Dreamweaver MX. Hope that doesn't complicate things.
