How can I pass some values on to another script?

My index.php detects visitor's IP's, system, .. and logs them in a mysql database..

Now I'd like to display some of the values calculated in the index.php in another (php) page WITHOUT having to access the db again.. how do I do this? The HTTP_ vars are different in the other page, of course..

I mean, is there a way to pass these results on to another page?

LOTS of different ways. You can pass them in the header via a cookie, use session variables, or plant them as hidden fields if you are using a form.

If you have a page that computes the variables, I find it better somtimes to just use an 'include' to pull in the next page, in which case the variabes will all be remembered. I sometimes use the results of my variables on the first page to determine which page to include for the display.

Hmm, I've considered cookies, but many ppl don't like them and have them disabled..

Session vars.. then this would be the only reason for using sessions on my site..

Problem is, the calculation has to be done in the index.php, or the values are incorrect.. the index.php has several frames.. in one of those I'd like to display some results.

I can't include the frame content into index.php. This would surely get me the vars (with the right values), but would mess up everything else :-)

I thought about forms, but would this work? I mean, the form action would execute the frame as a page while the index.php tries to load the frame..

Hmm I'll go try a few things.. confusing this is..

I think you will find more people that hate frames than you do hate cookies, but I agree that cookies are not a good way to pass variables. Including in frames is as easy in PHP as it is in HTML, you can have your indexPHP pull in the whole frameset, then have your frameset a php page that populates itself by including your results page.

Another option is putting the values in the URL. For instance:
your.domain.com/page.php?computedvalue1=computation&var2=anotherone

(Edit: actually, I have never tried passing varibles to another frame that way, you might lose state in another frame. I always stick to tables, but I know you could pass the variables inside the frameset by building the URL's on the fly with PHP and passing the variables in the URL.)

The index.php file calculates the vars.. so I think this is what you mean by 'result' page..

However, when I include this file in the frame, the results get calculated again, this time with the specs from the server (ip, referrer etc.. because the included file is called server-side)...

Good point concerning those frames 😉.. maybe I should lose them completely.. but wouldn't a browser have to constantly load the menu again in that case?

By the result page I meant the page that actually displays the values. Sometimes I will have the index page do all the calculations, then use them to determine which page is to be included, if values == x include resultpage1.php else if values ==y include resultpage2.php. Something along that logic.

I usually figure out wich pages to include as the index page first opens, then asign $include variables to load with the index page.
My index pages usually have a tiny bit of HTML to set up the shell, then everything else is included. Just whatever you feel comfortable with, I guess, there are a ton of ways to go about it. Although there are a ton of wrong ways, there is no right way.

Using frames is a constant debate. For every person that loves them you will find five more that find them ugly and unprofessional. I suppose you do use a little more bandwidth, but menu pages and such are not often that big of files, and any reloading images should be cached on the client.
