Will PHP3 work on PHP4

I have downloaded the latest PHP. I have an opensource code that I want to use but it ends with .PHP3 I cannot seem to get it to work. It displays the code in php code in the browser. If I take off the 3 from php, a few of the pages work. Is there a way to use this code with the latest version?

if you are using apache, add this line to httpd.conf:
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php3

I believe now things such as $HTTP_POST_VARS['somethin']

should be chanced into just $_POST['something']

I apologize for ignorance, but I have only been using for 3 days.
Where can I find the httpd.conf ?

on unix, most likely /usr/local/apache/conf
on windows, c:\program files\apache group\apache\conf
