html compression

I need to write a script to compress html before output to smaller the size. The script must do the following:
+ Merge lines.
+ Remove unnecessary whitespace characters.
+ Remove unnecessary quotation marks. For example, <table BORDER="0" CELLSPACING="0" CELLPADDING="0" align="center"> will be converted to <table BORDER=0 CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 align=center>.
+ Replace some tags with the short ones - replace STRIKE tags with S, STRONG with B and EM with I.
+ Remove <!DOCTYPE ...> tags.
+ Remove unneccessary meta tags. You can specify names of the meta tags to remove.
+ Remove double tags like <B><B>BOLD</B></B>. One <B> pair will be remove
If anyone know where to find this such things. Please tell me. Thanks.

Yes, I did. But I don't know much about Regular Expression though.

well i think you owuld being by making a parser and then one by one...replace all those things you mentioned above, i mean for doin something like border="0" to border=0

$Content = str_replace(""", "", $Content);

i think...just working off the top of me head...

or should it be:

$Content = str_replace("\"", "", $Content);

learn about regexp. they are very power and useful. Here on phpbuilder you can find a very good tutorial. Read it. Understand it. And use the power this tool gives you.

It is a amazing tool, you'll love the existence in every language you'll learn. It makes complex tasks easy to solve.

what enlight said-- they're a pain but worth it to learn the power. I HIGHLY recommend the O'Reilly book on regexps, which of course I can't find right this second but I use it all the time... hang on.... ah yes:

What pnoeric said - if you want you can cut out the middleman and order it direct from the publisher. In the meantime, there are two sections in the PHP manual, called "Pattern Syntax" and "Pattern Modifiers" that cover what the syntax is, if not how to use it in any sophisticated fashion.
