php/mysql usage cappabilities

Alright,

I stated to develop a site in php and choose mysql for the database.
The site is database driven, with about 3 differnt search engines (by location, by one item, and by item1 + item2) and a browse by category section as well.

The mysql database along with the rest of the site is expected to inflate rapidly.
Traffic is expected to range from 100,000 hits a day with say a total of 100,000+ members with multipul blocks data for each member.
The member groath is expected to be 10,000++ members per day.
Say each member will consume 1/2 - 1 MB(aiming high) of data.

Is it safe to program a site of this calaber in php/mysql?
speed wise? (if developed correctly) ?
space wise?

Obtaining hardware is not a problem.
What kind of hardware can you recommend?
and amount of hardware? such as RAM as well as bandwidth?

Any input is appreciated!

That's a pretty good estimate.... although i would make a few changes to it... if you are definately going to use 1 server only for this, with no load balancing..... you'll need a monster...

Proc: dual xeon
Memory: 2 gb
harddrive: 1.5 terrabytes (1mb per user at 100,000 users = 1 tb)
bandwidth: 2 terrabytes (but plan to expand quickly)
OS: Linux

the reason i say linux is because last i heard linux's dual proc support is better and quicker than any bsd's.

You coudl go with a sparc box... and that might work out better... hardware and software optimized for each other...

I also wouldn't use mysql for this... i would use oracle or db2 and woudl put this on it's own server. I suggest that you read over your prospective growth and reconsider using one server.... you'll need at the very least 3 in my opinion.... maybe more....

2 web servers (at least)
1 databases server

If you go with more servers, the hardware can be cut down a bit...

first off, thanks for the input guys!

Most definatly, we are not planning on running only one web server! We are going to start out with atleast 2 web servers and one database server.

the reason for not choosing Oracle, is the upfront expensives.
and it seems the more I look into Oracle the less I like it. Maybe it's only because of the cost, but I do hear that Oracle is quote "ugly", "expensive", and a huge waste for some applications.

We are just looking for the right solution for our site. Right now i am developing the protocal in php/mysql.

Is there a "breaking point" where mysql is no longer efficeint?
traffic wise?
