Can PHP check for an image file on a server?

Greets,

I know I can do if statements that check to see if certain data exisits or not in mysql columns...

With PHP can check to see if a file (example 1234.jpg) exists in a certain directory on my server???

1. Is this possible?
2. Can anyone supply me with or point me to some syntax of a simply IF STATEMENT?

to check if the file exists use is_file() (http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.is-file.php):

$checkFile = "1234.jpg";

if (is_file($checkFile)) {
    print "file exists!";
}

to make sure it actually is a jpg file (and not just another type RENAMED to jpg) you also can add a getimagesize() (see http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.getimagesize.php) if-statement:

$checkFile = "1234.jpg";
$fileInfo = getimagesize($checkFile);

if (is_file($checkFile) && $fileInfo[2] == 2) {
    print "file exists!";
}
