Sun Solaris, PHP & MySQL Compatibility?

I have a friend who is thinking about purchasing a Sun Solaris box. He asked me if I would install PHP 4 and MySQL on it if he gets it.

Problem is, I don't know if PHP 4 and MySQL will work on Solaris. Can someone offer some Solaris install advice to a RH Linux man?

Make sure you have the GNU compiler and GNU tar utilities installed on the Solaris machine, especially if you plan on building the MySQL server from the sources. I fought for a looooong time with that little snafu...

That's part of the reason I learned to hate Sun Microsystems (almost) as much as I hate Micro$oft...

Isnt Sun Solaris somewhat similar to linux in that you can use Linux builds of MySQL, PHP, etc. ?

Short answer: NO!

Especially if you're running on 64-bit SPARC processor(s). However, there should be SunOS / Solaris binaries available for MySQL. I had trouble (more than I'd care to remember) trying to build MySQL from the sources because there was no binary available for the particular version of SunOS we were running.

On the other hand, both Apache and PHP built like champs with their respective source-code distributions.
