get dir name (just the current dir, not entire path)

Is there an easy way to do this without a bunch of string manipulations?

i am setting up a site where i will separate out main content sections into directories. i want a header to print with just the current directory name.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think you need:

dirname();

at least you can start there.

i know that the dirname () will return the entire path. i'm trying to get jsut the current directory name, not the entire path.

basename(dirname(FILE));

will give the folder name the file is in, and not the full path to the current folder.
