Unexpected $

I'm having trouble getting my script to cleanly execute. I keep getting an error:
"PHP Parse error: parse error, unexpected $"
Which makes no sense to me since the error points to the last line of the header file which is simply a ?> to end the php.

I've posted txt files of all the scripts I'm using. If you need info about my database, I'd be happy to provide it. Here's the URL:

throw some extra echo's into your script and watch the location of the $. I'd say you have mismatched brackets somewhere.

What exactly do you mean by that? I added some:
echo "test";
statements randomly around on the script, but continued to get the same error message. I've double checked all the brackets and braces, and as far as I can tell I haven't missed anything. Is there anything else I can do to debug this script?

Well I checked your source and this caught my eye immediately. Didnt check other files so there could be more...

In header.txt

 

# go to index by default
if( !isset( $_GET['sectionID'] )){ // <- This brace might be the reason why it doesnt work.
{ 
	$sectionID = "";
}

# print the nav links
printNavLinks($sectionID, $_SERVER['PHP_SELF'], $printSubNavOption);

Don't you love accurate and meaningful error messages? Especially ones as well-documented as PHP's? :rolleyes:

Here's my theory, the '$' is the regexp "end-of-string" operator.

Oh the little things you always miss -- thanks!!! Why couldn't the error have said "Your {s don't match on line x"??? :-)

Perl would respond to this error with something like:

Missing right curly or square bracket at foo.pl line 5, at end of line
syntax error at foo.pl line 5, at EOF

Obviously, Perl (or PHP) can't really tell there's a '}' missing until the very end of the file is reached...
