new PHP learner & problem of DNS

I am studying PHP & it asked me to make my PC to act as a server so i installed PHPTraid 2-11 but the problem is when i write http://localhost is that i go know where & it tells me it is bad URL

in localhost.com it says the problem is due DNS since the browser doesn't have any idea.

can anyone please help me how to solve this problem

if so, try http://127.0.0.1

Yes both are started. Apache & MySQL
I also tried your method but it didn't work

I am hopeing to get help from you or anyone else who knows why when i have the server up & running & try to type in IE http://localhost it doesn't take me to anywhere or it takes me to a bad URL page or to www.localhost.com

Can you ping 127.0.0.1 successfully?

If you run ifconfig (or whatever the Win32 equivalent is if your using Windoze), does it show a 'loopback' network address (er, 127.0.0.1) anywhere in the IP listings?

there is no problem with pinging 127.0.0.1

i can do it successfully

but the respond to the ping is how long it took time. the normal results you get out of pinging the loop back address. like 4 pings, their time... etc.

telnet localhost 80
or
telnet 127.0.0.1 80
and see what happens

Try using Apache, it's a lot better (Apache.org). Don't use Apache2, because that's beta and there could be bugs in it still. At first, I couldn't understand a THING on how to install PHP and MySQL, but if you read the text file right, it makes perfect sense. You can contact me via:

I just wanted to let you know that the problem was solved. I had to check Bypass proxy server for local address & then i was easily being able to get to it.
