Redirect from one domain to another on same sever

G'day folks:

I originally posted this query on Sitepoint a while back, and thought I had the problem sussed after somebody helped me out, but discovered this not to be the case....🙁

My problem is that I have 2 domains pointing to the same directory on an Apache server, but would like to redirect traffic from one of those domains to a subdomain of the other of these domains using PHP:

Domain 1 = http://www.domain1.com
Domain 2 = http://www.domain2.com
Subdomain = http://sub.domain1.com

Redirect = http://www.domain2.com -> http://sub.domain1.com

If possible; I'd like also to be able to retain/maintain the domain in the URL string even after the redirect has occurred. (i.e.: without displaying the subdomain URL)

If anyone has dealt with any of this before and can help me out, that would be great, as I can't afford another hosting acocunt! :-)

it's painful when someone answers your question with a question.... however:

why don't you point the second domain name (domain2.com) to the set CNAME directory in the first place? Is there a reason you want them hitting the same directory?

Is that's the case, have a look at rewrite rules in the apache manual, you can rewrite the request and hold the url....

I would do if I knew how to! 😉 At the moment as I understand it, the primary domain (www.domain1.com) points to a single IP and www.domain2.com points to the same IP. How would I go about adjusting it as you say, so that I can point www.domain2.com to my subdirectory at: http://sub.domain1.com ??

Hi,

In your httpd.conf file, you will have the following:

#NameVirtualHost *
NameVirtualHost ip_address
NameVirtualHost ip_address
NameVirtualHost ip_address

#The above are IP address listings

Apache is listening to

Now you need to setup the second domain (domain2) as a virtual host. The primary virtual host is already set.

<VirtualHost ip_address>
ServerName domain2.com
ServerAlias www.domain2.com

Here is the key entry

DocumentRoot /path/to/htdocs

other options -- see apache.org docs.

</VirtualHost>

I have some code running in my site that allows any .nixxed.org to point to a user's page. So for instance nix.nixxed.org will point to my same ip as www.nixxed.org (i have .nixxed.org set as a vhost). At this point on my index page I just have a little if statement check to see if the subdomain is anything but www or blank. If it is something, it checks for some special subdomains, and then if the subdomain is a valid user name, and then gets the user's ID and loads the user's page (via include) so the URL the user typed shows nix.nixxed.org still. It looks like you were already answered, I just thought I'd toss in my few cents =0
