How can I get the current URL (PHP_SELF only gives the script filename)?

See also the other elements of the $SERVER array (print_r($SERVER)); you should be able to put together the entire request URL from some of them (SERVER_NAME and REQUEST_URI spring to mind).

I guess it was decided that there wasn't a need for an entire REQUEST_STRING element because it was so rarely needed - and when it was it could be put together from the other bits.
