Sessions!!!!!!!!!!!

ive given up using php cookies, they never wanted to work for me.
Now im trying to use sessions and they dont want to work for me either

if i call a file sess1.php containing:
<?
session_start();
?>

and run this through the browser. i get the following messages:

Warning: open(/tmp\sess_2d5fef7900a98c1a708d4b2658a9281c, O_RDWR) failed: No such file or directory (2) in c:\apache\htdocs\session\sess1.php on line 2

can someone tell me whats going on?
do i need to enalbe anything in the php.ini or httpd.conf files?
I useing windows XP if that makes a difference.

why are you calling a file that contains "session_start();" ?

Isn't that the same as just typing it in?

p.s. You can not call session_start() from a file...it has to be the first thing in your file.....

got it sorted, just something wrong with my php.ini file.

Fixed this now. For anyone who is interested you have to change this line in your php.ini file:

; Argument passed to save_handler.  In the case of files, this is the path
; where data files are stored. Note: Windows users have to change this 
; variable in order to use PHP's session functions.
session.save_path = /tmp

You should change it to 'c:\apache\sessions' or something similar.

When i log in and go to pages in main directory, everything is all right. However, when i try to go to /other directory, it seems like php doesnt transfer session_registered variables (login and pass), and function die activates. :\ may it be due the some kind of server error? I'm pretty sure my script is right, because 5 minutes ago it worked well 🙂

OK everytinhing is all right. I found that other users can browse normally then i delete all cookies and everything is ok. However, i still cannot uderstand the reason :rolleyes:

yeah, sorry guys

the fix was like the bloke said with the path for the php.ini file thats all, i did not say an exclusive path for the storage of the session variables.

Applogies for not letting you know.
When i said there was something wrong with the php.ini file, i automatically assumed you knew what i was going on about.

Ok... I wanted to start building on XP and IIS for now until I get my Linux box completed. I have tried every suggestion on the internet for sessions. They just dont work for me on XP and IIS no matter what. Before you try to help me... I have given permissions to IUSR_MACHINENAME to my session directory. This is the same directory that is set in my php.ini file for sessions.
I have some sample code from the "PHP & Mysql" book for sessions. Page1.php sets the session and registers the varable. The variable is supposed to get passed to Page2.php that has session_start() set at the beginning. But it returs "Undefined Variable". I see the session files getting written to the session directory but nothing is in the file. Just a blank file with the sessionID as the name. I really dig PHP but after spending a week jsut trying to get sessions to work, Im about to just give up on it. Nobodies suggestions have helped me resolve this.

Please, if you would like to take a stab at it.... give me an idea of what I am doing wrong. I have tried over 15 suggestions from people and I have 3 machines with XP and IIS with PHP. All the PHP works great except for these damn SESSIONS! Please help

Thanks for all the help that has been given.... I reinstalled everythng and turned the damn Register_Globals to = ON and it just decided that it will work now! Sweeeet!
