A Poor Boy's PHP challenge

Well, I know this is probably a bit rediculous but I can' figure this out quite yet anyway ...I was wondering if anyone knows how or could write a record nav class that does the following:

counts only rows that are specifically requested ..ie ....lets say rows where the date has not expired ...then builds a nav of records limited to maybe 5 per page with next and previous buttons and a few record numbers in between. Yes there is prob a better way to do this ...but I think it could be done anyway and well I am curious as to know if anybody else has been able to do this.

The script would first present like maybe 5 recs per page ..then the next previous buttons with a few rec numbers in between and it would refesh to itself (the page).

Any takers on this challenge?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sure you'll find a variety of pre-fabbed solutions that either meet your needs directly or could tweaked to provide the exact functionality you require, with a little elbow-grease.

If you're hell-bent on doing it yerself (hey, you gotta respect those who are self-motivated), the basics will involve:

Get yourself comfortable with the WHERE, LIMIT and (possibly ORDER BY) statements offered by your database engine. (Which, BTW, I didn't see specified in your post. MySQL? PostgreSQL? Oracle? SQL Server? Sybase? They all have their special little 'innuendos'...);
Decide how you'll pass the WHERE, LIMIT (and, if necessary, ORDER BY) variables from one page to the next;
Build a 'generic' query handler that can plug in the variables sent with each 'page' request;
Build a generic HTML table generator to display the results (this is probably the easiest piece to construct);

Don't assume that the folks wading through the posts on this forum (or others) are going to see this as a 'challenge' and write the code for you. Give it a go yourself; if you get stumped on a particular component, many of the people in here are more than happy to help you when confounded by a specific problem.
