regEx - pattern matching...

could someone please write down the pattern i need to replace all chars that are NOT letters or numbers in a filename? (a-zA-Z0-9)

do not worry about the dot before the extension - i just deal with the actual fileNAME - the extension gets appended afterwards.

i want to replace all characters that are NOT letters or digits with either underscores or just delete them... ie - i need $pattern for this:

$newFilename = eregi_replace("$pattern", "_", $oldFilename);

so "can't stop this thing we started!" becomes "can_t_stop this_thing_we_started_"

Well, I usually like to smoke a big, fat joint before I play with reg_exps, and unfortunately that's just not possible today... But here goes one of my few sober attempts this:

$pats = array("/[^a-zA-Z0-9 ]/", "/ /");
$reps = array("","_");
$var = "I can't stop this thing we started.";
echo preg_replace($pats, $reps , $var);

Hey, it worked for me...
