how to define font file in ImageString()?

I am trying to creat a PNG file, which contains only text, on the fly. I am able to do it with the ImageString() function now, but I donno how to change the font style, font size, etc.

Could any one give me some hints?

For some reason, I do not want GIF files. and the imagettftext() does not work.

I did some search on the archives but I was overwhelmed by too many unrelated topics.

Since it uses bitmapped fonts, ImageString() doesn't do resizing or restyling - those things are fixed in the font file.

For resizing you need a font specified in a vector-based format - TTF in other words. (As the documentation suggests, do you have FreeType installed?), and as noted in the GD documentation, GIF images are not supported - (a) because it would be illegal, and (b) because PNGs are the better format anyway.
