to publish it on the web, are these scripts suppose to be in txt files uploaded to the server, then linked to the webpage?

I was putting the scripts into an html doc, maybe this is why I am having a hard time?

PHP files conventionally end with .php.

The Web server decides what to do with a file by looking at the MIME-type, which is mplied by the extension to the filename.

If you make your filename end with .html or .htm, the server is not going to process any PHP code in that file (unless you reconfigure the server).
