parsing out specific elements

I write down almost everything I learn here, I swear. This is probably one of the most easiest questions, but after a long holiday my brain needs a jumpstart.

In any event, here's my question:

I have a field in a db that records two pieces of information, a city and a state, separated by a comma. My question is, how would I go about parsing that out after selecting the data into 2 elements?

Example:

goes in as city, state
needs to come out as: $city $state (two data elements)

i dont really understand your question, what kind of db do you use? separate by comma???

In a form I had the user enter their city name, and select a state from a dropdown.

In the insert page, I took the two vars and put them together separated by a comma.

$location = "$city, $state";

I need to retrieve $location from the db and parse it back to $city and $state.

I use mysql.

Make sense?

ok, to retrive $location from the db, you know how right?
now lets break it apart
