exec or something like it

what I need to do is from a PHP script, spawn a GUI program (not in PHP). exec does not seem to work for that and I'm not sure how to aproach this. It's probably very simple. Could someone please help?

jacrewq, here's what i mean:
i have program X that is a GUI program written in C for the solaris environment
form my php script, I'd like to start X (with some input parameters) and the move on (not wait to see what happens in X)

DigitalExpl0it, thanks for that code, it really had my hopes up.
it compiles fine and it works if executed command line from a shell terminal. however, nothing happens from a netscape window.
I've verified my paths and tried various programs and parameters.

do you have any ideas?
