Hiding a URL

hello-
i know this is probably a fairly common question, but i didnt see it in either the newbie or general help forum... so sorry if this has been covered a thousand times.

i was wondering if it is possible to hide a URL such that the people viewing the site would see...
http://www.website.com

instead of
http://www.website.com/index.php?foo=bar&blah=316&so on&so on

i think ive seen it done before, but im not sure if it was done in php or something else

if you use frames it hides it 🙂 but frames suck.. or if you use a submit to pass vars instead of a href=blah.php?etc=... ...
