sort array

I used sort() to sort an array. But the first element, which is
array[0] was chopped off after the sorting. Why was that?

Here it is:
sort($content_array,SORT_STRING );

i mean what type of the array was? number index array, string index array??

Actually there is a long string separated by ;. I made each is an element of an array but some elements are strings while others are number. How could I sort this kind of array? I opened a file using aw and write something to the file. But the cursor is always on the top of the file instead of the bottom of the file. Why did this happen?
