file() and fopen()

uhhhhh.

i need to get the contents of a whole lot of files, modify the contents, and save the files.

all is well and good, 'cept for the fact that file() and fopen() are returning nothing for the content for <b>some</b> of the files. i <b>know</b> that there is about 600 lines / file, and some of the files open and return content fine...

i dont have the func file_get_contents because its not a php cvs build, but i dont think it would make any difference, seeing as fopen and file do exactly the same thing.

its a win2k server, with the latest php cgi...

Does the web server user have permission to read ALL of the files?

Are you processing these files all at once (in one script)? Could the script be exceeding its time limit or memory limit as set in PHP.INI?

Not too useful of suggestions, I know. But I use file() all the time on both Linux/Apache and NT/IIS and haven't had a problem.

i hear ya... ive never had a prob till now... the script itself takes over 20 minutes to run (there's over 60 domains to proccess) and im setting the time limit to compensate for that...

as for the permissions, php created the files its trying to open...

Ok, I've never had a script that took 20 minutes to run either. Is this actually one script processing (10's, 100's, 1000's) of files? If so, perhaps you should consider only processing one file per script and chaining the script to itself.

For example, have one script build a file list into an array, then pass the array to your processing script which pops one file name out of the array, processes that file, and then calls itself again passing the (now smaller) file name array in the process. This way each script should be pretty managable in both time and memory requirements.

yeah.. whats happened is we've had over 60 domains change host to one of our boxes, and i need to proccess all the old stats from the old servers... i can easily get the format of the log file, but then i need to write the config file so i can do "awstats.pl -logfile=asdfasdfasdfasdf", but the config file contents are not coming to me...

im getting a list of all the log files within a folder (they are haphazardly all over the place in format... greaaaat), so i open it, get the log format from the first few commented lines. i open the config file, modify it, rewrite it, update the stats, reset the config file back.

its purely to get ancient stats... so im not too concerned with the speed of it all, it only needs to be done once...

well, thats what i want to do.... but opening the config file will not return the contents for most of the config files!!!

o my gosh.... if only there was a cool emoticon for hittin self in head with sledge hammer....

in one of the previous runs of the script, to test the rewriting, it cleared the file, and i hadnt noticed!

the file was empty all along!!! 😊
