browser doesn't read my PHP

Is there a trick to get my browswer to read the php.

I installed using the directions from the install doc that came with the php..and one I got from the documents

my operating system is mandrake 8.2
and httpd-2.0.40.tar.gz (apache)
php4-latest.tar.gz

I have an apache file in dir--called Apps
and that is the directory that apxs is
so that is the httpd.conf file I configured.
now maybe I but the cp php.ini.dist in the wrong place
I put it in /usr/local/lib/php.ini

If anyone has any clues please help.
I have been working on this for days and my family thinks I am in a computer fog.

IMHO browser reads HTML. PHP script results as html. Maybe u try to open php files without server? 🙂

i am using my own computer.. I have apache runnilng on my computer.. how else would use it..
how do I know I am opening it up through the server..

do I save the file in a different place.. I am really lost.

please help me..

Depending on how you have php and apache installed. You should have a directory which is php enabled so to speak. lets say its called phpdev. all your php files should go inside of that folder. Take a look through you php folder in the c: drive and try to find php files. after that you may access the php files through the localhost.

So, what you would do is open the browser. and type http://localhost/php/phpdev/test.php for example. This will open and treat your php file as you want it to.

I am using Mandrake linux

I refuse to use windows if I can help it..

now I didn't see that (directions to do that) anywhere and I am sure that is the problem.
I have just been opening up my brower.

I will try puttng a file in the /usr/include/php

any more sugestions would be nice

Now i read apache doc..
but I am still confused.

I typed in
http://my.computername.com/usr/local/apache/devphp.test.php

http://my.computername.com/usr/local/lib/php/devphp.devphp.test.php

and when i tried to open it I get server timed ouit..

I think that has to do with mysql.
I am not sure.

Plus I got a monster headache trying to figure this out.

you must save all your php files into apache directory, and direct into htdocs
then you can run your php fron
http://localhost/yourfile.php

I put the test.php in the htdocs on my apache root server

i put in http://localhost/test.php

and this is what I get
Not Found
The requested URL /test.php was not found on this server.

Apache-AdvancedExtranetServer/1.3.23 Server at rainbow2.rainbowstop.com Port 80

I also use Mandrake 8.2, and my www files are located at /var/www/html/

Better yet, you could create a directory named "public_html" in you home directory, put your files there, and access it at http://localhost.localdomain/~user/
