XP = Bad News (?)

Hi folks.

I would greatly appreciate it if someone would inform me how to name a .htaccess file in Windows XP please.

All I get is a message telling me that I "must type a filename".

It appears that this latest incarnation of the MicroSlopp OS cannot even tell that the a filename is greater than 0 chars, even if it does look like a long extension without a prefix.

As an aside, it appears that it (the nonOperating System) won't even recognise an .htaccess file copied over from a different machine, as my AddType line is being completely ignored.

I have just altered the httpd.conf file to include .htm in the AddType line and the php file was parsed correctly.

So that proves to me (unless someone can tell me otherwise) that the .htaccess file is not recognised by XP.

Astonishing, frustrating and ridiculous.

Any ideas anyone? (apart from quitting and becoming a landscape gardener 😉 )

It IS possible to use .htaccess files on WinXP (or any versions of windows that have apache running). All you need to do is to open notepad and then type the directives in and save as ".htaccess" (minus the quotes). Ive done it this way and have had no probs whatsoever.

Yeah. I'm running PHP 4.2.2 on Apache on Win XP Pro Just use a text editor to name it .htaccess.

The quotes solution is correct. If you have access to php.ini, why not set php up correctly? I mean, without having to set it up through .htaccess. In my opinion (not that it means much. :p), .htaccess should be left for things like stopping hotlinking, error pages, etc.

Thanks for the thoughts folks but I think I am on to a loser here.
I believe that in true MS fashion, there is an inconsistent, or non-persistent bug in the OS. I cannot use a text editor to rename the file as the OS will not allow the file to be saved. I even wrote a byte-streaming utility in Delphi to stream the file into another and got the same error.

On my PC at home, I do have access to PHP.ini and httpd.conf but at my ISP I do not. Oh well.

This MS stuff has got up my nose for the last time. I am going to bin it and install Linux onto this box. I'll just have to put up with the hassle of setting up the iptables and firewall stuff.

Microsoft will die soon in the OS market anyway. OSX and Lindows / Linux will see to that eventually, so everyone should stop using it now. 😉

Power to you! 🙂 *nix will most certainly grab the market and will do so very, very soon. Two countries have already moved away from proprietary software. Peru and Venezuala (sp) have already moved to OpenSource despite Microsofts pleas. 🙂 Many states in the U.S. have also dropped proprietary software and are using and teaching opensource. 🙂
