How can I use form results as a variable?

Greetings,

I am having lots of trouble figuring out how to take
a form result and use it in an email.

So if a user fills in thier name how do I use
that name in an email automatically sent by the php script?

I have the email working fine. I would just like to be
able to say ... Hello $name thanks for ......instead of

Hello, thanks for.....

If you are running a PHP version greater than 4.2.x, register_globals is off by default. So, you message would have to be like:

$message = "Hello $_POST[name], thanks for doing whatever";

PHP 4.1.x issued the first use of the "super-globals", see:

Im not sure where that $message fits into the script.

Should I create the mail as complex see example 4 here

The $_POST works great in the send to part of the script but will not work anywhere in the message body.

I was assigning the value of the string to a variable, so your code looks like:


$message = "Hello $_POST[name], thanks for doing whatever";
mail($_POST['name'], "PHP Test", $message);

Another variation (that follows PEAR convention) is:

$message = "Hello {$_POST[name]}, thanks for doing whatever";

Thanks alot working like a charm now.

Why is it when I try to set variables ie..

$name = whatever (theres always a parsing error)

it doesnt work? Is this because Globals are off ?

After looking at your examples I noticed you had { } around

$_POST["name"]

So thats what I did to make it work.

What book should I get that would have definitions of things like {} [] " ' \/ I have never done any coding or programming but PHPBB2 kinda got my interest plus the fact that some of the best websites I have seen recently are php based.
