All,
I am creating a form and have the following problem.

I need users to enter certain fields, and I want to create a dialog box that will tell them they cannot proceed without completing this part of the form.

Problem is I don't know how to do it!
Please help!🙂

php can't do that, you must use javascript, but ry to search in this forum, i think this question have been posted many times 🙂

Yes, you have to use javascript.
This is an example:

Thanks for the response.
It didn't work though, I created two files, try.php and test.php,
with the html code in try and the php code in test and it didn't work.
I tried putting all the code in the same file, didn't work.

All I am getting is test.php opening and

?test=Submit+Query

Any ideas?

OK, do the following:

if ( document.forms[0].elements[0].value == "" ||
document.forms[0].elements[1].value == "" ) {
alert ("Please complete all the fields before continuing");
return false;
}
</script>

note the forms[0] is stating you are using the first foem on the page. and elements[0] is the first form field and ele,ments[1] is the second form field. You may not need to change this.

that's what I use with the submit button as follows
<INPUT type="button" value="Submit" ID=Submit1 onclick="mySubmit( window.myForm )">

myForm being your form's ID.

I got it working guys, thanks for your help!

What I now need to do is work out how to send the user back to the page they didn't enter the information in.
Does this make sense, any ideas?

It's better to stop the user in the current page with an 'exit' in the code, isn't it?

I don't think I explained myself very well - apologies.

I have the first page collecting information from the user, when they hit the submit button, a seperate page checks the information and highlights any errors - this is the page I am trying to place the popup on.

What I want to do is, when an error is found and a popup is displayed, upon clicking the OK button, the user is sent back to the first page to re-enter the information that they either missed out or was incorrect.

I have tried placing the code in the first page, but it will obviously bring the error messages up every time the page loads.

Can anyone help or am I just confusing you all?

history.back() would be more apropriate (would keep the data in the form...)

the form will not be sended, until all fields are filled in.

Sorry to be asking another javascript question,
How do I start a new line in my alert window?

I want text to be like
this is, on a new line.

instead of like this, all on one line making the window grow wider.

Can anyone help?
Also, if you can let me know a good javascript tutorial so I don't keep pestering you all!

Are you talking about the

\r \n

commands?

I have tried using them, but get error messages saying that the line is unterminated, if I place a ; at the end, then I get a syntax error.

\r\n do work in javascript

window.alert "yo\r\nyo" will open a

yo
yo

msgbox.

Yeah, I tried that way:

echo"<script>
window.alert "You have not entered a username\r\nnew line"
<\script>";

I get an error message missing ; on the end of line 2. (line ending in new line"

I tried it with a ; but made no difference.

Any ideas?
