FULL TEXT search on MySQL

Hallo,

I am going ahead looking for an 'easy' and fast way to get a good working search engine for my little database.

I have just discovered the chance to use FULL TEXT search on some fields, so I have wrote the following SQL string that is working quite well:

SELECT *,
MATCH(band, singer) AGAINST('$keyword') AS score
FROM bands
WHERE MATCH(band, singer) AGAINST('$keyword')
ORDER BY score DESC

My tables content are singers and bands names as you can understand. The query is working very well with search strings like "whitney Houston" or "Red Hot chilly peppers" ...but I get no results at all when typing short words like "U2" or "rem" ...

Anybody here could tell me why is this happening and how could I try to fix it ?

By default, mySQL only allows 4 or more character strings in fulltext.

Minimal length of word to be indexed is defined in myisam/ftdefs.h file by the line:

#define MIN_WORD_LEN 4

Change it to the value you prefer, recompile MySQL, and rebuild your FULLTEXT indexes.
