Newbie regarding sessions

I have a php application running which redirects to page
on another site and "comes back".

I am noticing that in so doing, that the session is lost
upon return.

I have read up and found that in such a scenario, it is necessary
to send the session as an arg so that it will come back
and I can then revive the session.

How do I get the session ID to send out?

And secondly how do I revive a session given that ID?

to get hte current session ID, just use

$sid = session_id();

well I am getting the sid no problem,

I read the manual, and I am a bit embarrassed to say, it is still
not clear to me how you cause a page to "pick up" the
session whose id is passed via a GET variable.

I mean I have

$sid // being passed in

session_start(); // how to tell this call to revive the session id'd by $sid

?
