PHP , Folder Protection.. Please Help

Hi,
I made a PHP password script and the user can log in if he knows the user name and password...

But if I want some to protect some pages.. so I did a group management thing adn set up different users having different kind of access to pages..

But I want to the same for some pdf and word files which are saved in a folder..

Can some one tell me how to do a folder protection...

if you're using an apache server and have the right to use a .htaccess file, it would probably be the simplest way. You can look up all there is on the subject by using a search engine with +".htaccess" +"password protection" +folder or sth like that. If you need to do it in PHP, just post again 😉

I am not using apache server.. This is Win2000 ...

What do you mean by "just post again".. because I have to protect those folders by giving users permissions for accessing them..
These folders have word adn pdf files in them..

Can you please tell me a bit more about it...

anyway, you cant use PHP to actually protect a folder on your drive; that is, if I know that you have got the file test.doc in your folder www.yourUrl.com/docs i can simply get it by adding with www.yourUrl.com/docs/test.doc. Any protection to prevent that must happen on the server side.
If your folder is protected against simplr calls by filename, you could then just place a login protected php page in another folder and add links to the files you want to supply. Depending on the server (Honestly, I got no clue how a Win2000 Server works 😉 you might have to use headers (simply look up header() on www.php.net) to access a file and force a download box.

yeah banged my head on the walls many times over this but apparently it DOES work (never got it to work properly though)
