PHP problem

I admit it. I am not one of you clever folk who hand code stuff. Frankly I just don't have the time! But I do need your expertise.

I am building an interactive site at the moment using Dreamweaver MX, PHP, MySQL. I am getting a PHP generated cgi error when I send a PHP command:

"CGI Error
The specified CGI application misbehaved by not returning a complete set of HTTP headers. The headers it did return are:"

the rest is an empty page!

At the moment this means that I cannot connect to my database from DWMX or anything else at the present time. I suspect that a parameter needs setting somewhere, but where?

Environment is WinXP, IIS, PHP 4.2.3 (just been uninstalled and reinstalled), MySQL 3.23.

To create a connection to the database via DWMX gives me an HTTP 500 error.

Please help, my fingernails are getting shorter every minute and my hair is getting thinner where I am tearing it out.

This is IIS trying to tell you it cannot find the file.

Yes, but which file? The command typed into the document was simply <?php phpinfo(); ?>.

So where is it looking for the file I can't trace, and what can I do about it? Any ideas?

Are you sure Dreamweaver is actually saving the file in the right place?

Posting which file? The file is saved locally. How it calls PHP I don't know. What should I be looking for.

The error I displayed was after a simple type in to a plain doc. F12 to display (both before and after saving) gives me the same result. I'm probably being a bit dim and missing something completely here.

The file (the PHP file which you've just made with Dreamweaver) has to be saved to a directory within IIS's webroot.

Dreamweaver then calls IIS which loads the page (or at least this is how I assume DreamweaverMX does it - don't own it, don't want to, don't even use IIS - for these reasons)

I think you might need to take another look at the Dreamweaver Docs or post on Macromedia's forums.

I have been able to get the other command working by saving under the webroot.

Thanks for reminding me but there is definately some kind of problem with the connection. My previous sites were all set up under the localhost webroot and got stuffed anyway.

I have set up a new site (I now have to go through the pain of migrating all the other stuff across) and at your suggestion I have set up another new folder under webroot.

I have also changed some of the default settings in the php.ini - rightly or wrongly (prior to our little chat!). We will see what that does for me!

I have been able to set up sites in the past that include links to data but the second time I go to create a recordset it cannot find them.

I am hopeful that this time all will be well. I envy you purists and appreciate your help.
