Count() not giving totals

For some reason, I cant get it to give me a count.
I cant seem to find anything wrong.

count is an agregate function, and can't be selected with other fields. Can you just perform the SELECT query and then use mysql_num_rows on the result set to get the number of records???

For the help, although the problem still isnt solved.
The full script is supposed to read the database and tell me how many people gave the same answers to a series of questions.

Question 1: How helpfull was the staff?
Answers: -2, -1, 0, 1, 2
Totals : 5, 53, 162, 207, 97
Percent: 1%.....etc

Only, I cant seem to get it to total the numbers. It keeps giving me the answers to the questions. Is there a better way than I am attempting?
