Hi there,

Maybe, other members will be interested on this inquiry.
We are looking for a small distro of linux that can hold php scripting and mysql client (not server) for data processing.

We want to use our old PC's such us Pentium-100 to act us our SMS (Mobile texting) system gateway which has the capability of gathering info of the sender and reply back on their inquiry.

We already have the applications up and running under redhat 7.0 using C++ programming and PHP for data processing and security.

I am not a good communicator, my apology regarding my english grammar.

Thanks in advance,

Robert E. Baluyot

Depending on how much functionality you want there are plenty of distros. I have a pentium 90, running a mysql server, php, apache and some mail server stuff. The hardrive is only 840MB and it runs like a champ. 🙂 The distro is Debian. Debian can be a very large system (like redhat) if you chose to install all the packages, but if you just install the base system, its about like Slackware (one of the smallest distros), with a nice packaging system. Again when you install the base system just make sure that you install only what is needed.

    Hope this helps!

You can also use Gentoo Linux. It has a generic install ISO thats only 16 megs. If you want something to run on it that requires libs you will probably have to install it yourself. But if a stripped down version of linux is what u want. It will give it to you.

This isn't a newbies distro though. You should know what your doing.

Thank you for your quick reply.

What Im looking for is a small distro that can fit to Pentium 100 with 4-8MB RAM and 40 MB Hardisk. Since it will only function as a gateway and not database server.

        Just like FREESCO or LRP.

        Hope you understand.

You mat be able to install FreeBSD on an HDD that size.

            6 days later

FreeBSD's Minimum install is 71 megs. Unfortunately, not a lot will run on 40 megs these days.
