Auto increment

hello everybody,

The ID field is an auto-increment in a table.I try to insert some records into the table through a form and it works fine.I've deleted the records and then i again inserted them.BUt, the id field is not set to 1.

For example i tried to insert two records first time.So, Id columns has values 1 and 2.I deleted them now.
I tried to insert two records again.Now, the id column has the values 3 and 4.
So, how can i restrict this.I want this to be again 1 and 2.
I'm using interbase as my database.

Any ideas???

that' a normal behavior for most databases...

yup, I get that aswell, I would really worry about it... the reason it happens is to keep a unique number for each row, now after deleting a row, i would agree about then having 1 and 2 again, but if you think about it...if it is a customer number, then u cant have someone having an old persons one, just incase the computer still stores some of that information, etc.

its easier just to increment the whole time; Well that is my opinion, hope it helps 🙂

to the data and only referenced by the app when looking up the user or whatever, it doesn't really matter (ps don't mess with it or you really screw thing up)

why dislike or discourage the use of a command you're not familiar with, because there is a command that does this exactly, although a bit undocumented..

alter tablename auto_increment=#

Use the following command if you want the numbering to start over:

TRUNCATE TableName;

This will delete all information in the table and restart the numbering.
