physical path or relative path

in the file handling, i have seen people using the physical address such as d:\webs\mysite\wwwroot\test...

or relative path.

they are both working fine, right?

any special reasons i should use one way except another? i am preferring relative path, for portable reason.

i personally would use a path relative to $DOCUMENT_ROOT
