installing PHP 4.2.3 on Win2000 pro

after downloading the .zip file and the installer, have all sorts of problems...

winzip & Powerzip both indicate that the .zip distribution is not a valid archive
the installer does not do anything ( get the command box and nothing)

is there a better installer somewhere or a diff download for windows that is a valid archive?

is there some thing that i am missing?

Use binary .exe installer for windows, not zipped distribution. ...works fine for me...

okok, sure... some ppl just love to do everything manually (even parking the arm of their hd on logoff 😉 but you can always do necessary changes after.

No no no!!! Dont use the .exe file when installing PHP. You don't get even half the usefullness of this wonderful language (like the extensions for one thing).

Not sure why the .zip isnt working. I downloaded it the other day and it worked fine for me (Win XP Pro just in case anyone is wondering).

Same for me, got the download from PHP.net for 4.2.3 and it worked first time like a treat. Try another zipper, (WinRAR, WinACE if using windows)

If you are after a different download site, there are plenty of PHP.net mirrors everywhere..

Yeah, do what he says, try a different mirror, but dont download the .exe file for windows.

when i downloaded the zip, it suddenly finished downloading when it was about half way through - no errors or anything. If you were'nt watching the download carefully, i'm betting this is what happens. Then winzip will pop up a message saying not a valid archive etc etc.

.exe installer is more easy to install for noobs (like me, hrhr) until they get more familiar with php.

EXE is evil it doesn't work right and doesn't allow you to change settings. READ: never ever use exe installer. The zip is as easy to use as anything you just extract it to a folder and read the install.txt
Try clearing your cache before downloading it again. That should clear out the corrupted one.

Hi everybody,

Well I finally had to install the new version of PHP because the one I used didn't support GD truecolor functions and was not as secure as the new one.

I had troubles while trying to install that f*****ing self-install .EXE PHP and... I read your posts... Wouah... EXE sucks ? Damn EXE ? EXE is evil ? At first I thought... You guys are crazy... I mean EXE is god, easy-to-use, self install...

But with PHP It doesn't work that way, the EXE install really sucks and didn't work for me, I simply had to unzip the ZIP release in my c:\PHP folder and "voilà"! I then simply copy the new PHP ini file and It perfectly work. No more PHP Warning about the GD lib, no more "can't load that .dll". No no more 🙂

SO DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME INSTALLING PHP WITH THE .EXE FILE, IT DOESN'T WORK PROPERLY (W2K PRO, IIS5).

ps: damn and It was the easy part, now I have to refactor all my scripts and projects... God damned 🙁

And also, if you use the .exe install file, then you cant use all the great extensions.

I finally got the damn thing working...the problem was that download accelerator was taking the link to mirrors html page as part of the file and did not obviously make the llink to continue the download from one of the mirrors. when i turned it off, everything worked fine...

didn't use the installer either, manually...lots o fun...took about two hours to realiaze that when i extracted the files to the same folder where I had 4.06 installed that i was trying to edit the old ini file :eek: !! once i got that sorted out it all seemed to be okay...tonight i gotta make phpmyadmin work again:mad:
