Filtering Words

I want to work a "cuss word filter" into my script, but, if I'm replacing "dog", how can I prevent it from replacing "doggy"?

Like:

"dog" becomes "***"

but:

"doggy" doesn't become "***gy"

I've tried some expressions with preg_replace but I'm not very good with them and couldn't come up with much.

I appreciate any help you guys can give!

just be specific in your RE

$var = "doggy";

preg_replace('/dog/',"***",$var);

echo $var

should produce ***gy

That's the opposite of what I want.

I ended up going with this:


$var = 'doggy';

preg_replace("/([\:-\@]|[\[-\`]|[\!-\/]|\s|^)dog(\s|$|[\:-\@]|[\!-\/]|[\[-\`])/isu","\\1***\\2", $var);
