index.php served as document

Hi,
I am trying to set up squirelmail on my SuSE Linux box running Apache. The problem is that the index.php file is not executing. IOW the actual code is being served instead of the application. The file is set to be world executable and index.php has been added to DirectoryIndex in the httpd.conf file. I am out of ideas and don't know the first thing about php.

The only idea, rather stupid: does your server understand .php as extension for executable php-scripts? i.e. is there proper mime-type set for .php files?
