Question on UPDATE and mysql_affected_rows()

I have noticed some unusual behavior when using updates in MySQL...

After an UPDATE, if the information that is supposed to "update" the database is the same that is stored in the database already, mysql_affected_rows($dbLink) seems to return "0"... is this normal behavior and/or are there any ways around it?

have u read the manual? I always find the mysql docs soo hard to read that i wish Kevin Yank had re-written them.

from what I understand, if a column hasn;t changed, then whats the point in updating it, therefore no affected rows....

you could always return a rand() number if you wish something to diaplay...
