calculate highest integer

I have a news php script that scans a database for the latest headlines/articles. How can I make it find/pick the one that has the highest ID? So basically, it scans the mysql database for the highest, most recent ID, whichever is the highest number, it placed that article on the main page. How can I make it pick the one with the highest number?

select * from table order by id desc limit 1

can u not base the latest news_id on timestamp, therefore ORDER BY timstamp WHERE timestamp < $whatever will giv eoyu the latest
