SQL Queries in separate file?

Starting to get the hang of a few things now....('bout time too!)

Anyway, after installing a few apps etc, I've come across separate files with pre-defined 'SELECT * FROM...' queries in them.

Assuming that I haven't got the wrong end of the stick with this one, how are these queries called? What are the pros/cons for having pre-defined queries as opposed to building queries upon variables?

Anyone got a torch to shed some light...

Queries in a textfile are often used for repetative tasks and maintenance because you can feed them directly to the database, without having to write/edit/execute a script. For example, backups are usually written to a textfile as a set of queryies that do everything to rebuild the database from scratch.

When working from a script it is _much) easier to create queries on the fly than to read them from some textfile.
