typed url detection

Hi,

I'm working in a new company and their server is full of directories for clients (about 90) plus the directories i use for the site.

What i'm trying to do is to move these directories to a subdirectory and then make the 404 php page detect and redirect depending on the typed url.

More clearly :

The client types :
http://www.name.com/dir/

The dir does not exist anymore so he is redirected to
http://www.name.com/404.php

The script should detect the original typed directory in the address
( /dir/ ) and then redirect to
http://www.name.com/subdir/dir/.

I don't manage to detect the TYPED url.
$http_referer - does not work
$resquested_uri - neither.

Can someone help ?

maybe problem is in typing $resquested_uri instead of $REQUEST_URI? 🙂

Sorry, but i mistyped it in my message but not in my page code.

$REQUEST_URI returns me /404.php and not the url i originally typed.

What f**ks it all is the redirection to the 404 page !!!!

I think this will have to be done by having the web server rewrite URLs of the form http://www.name.com/dir/ to http://www.name.com/subdir/dir/.

Having the server rewrite it as http://www.name.com/404.php means PHP won't ever see the original URL, because the server has already rewritten it by the time PHP gets the job!

If you want an error message of the sort "you should be trying http://www.name.com/subdir/dir", have the server rewrite the URL to include the dir name in the querystring - something like "http://www.name.com/404.php?dir=[insert requested dir here]". Then PHP can know what dir was requested.

The server is a dedicated one so i can not tell him to rewrite the urls as you said previously.

I thought about passing the original url in a variable, but this still doesn't work.

I make an .htaccess file in which i entered

ErrorDocument 404 http://www.name.com/404.php?url=$http_referer

ErrorDocument 404 http://www.name.com/404.php?url=$requested_uri

but the server does not replace the variable with its value but leaves the variable name.

I think this is because the .htaccess does not understand php.

I don't see what to do !!!!

I think you'll need to hit your server's documentation to see how to write such a rewrite rule.

On the other hand, leafing through Apache's documentation (you're using Apache, I guess), suggests to me that the $ENV[] array might contain something useful. Stick a print_r($ENV) into 404.php and see what it contains when you try a bad URL.

I' ve got it !!!!

The solution was not with php but with htaccess.

All you need is to create an .htaccess file at the root of your website and then to enter :

Redirect /dirname http://www.name.com/subdir/dirname/

and that's all
