Searching for web pages in the CD-ROM

Halo...

I'm a beginner in PHP.. researching for solutions to the problem which is about getting the search results on the matches of web pages in the CD-ROM.

Also, the desired web page is needed to load on the internet browser from the CD-ROM when select the web page.

These functions will be carried out without any use of a web server or database.

So... is it possible to do that in php and a flat file? Any other solutions to this? Java applet?

Not real sure what you mean. If you are asking can you store web pages on a CD ROM, the answer is yes. You will have to run a webserver on the machine though.

Thanks for your reply... Hmm, what I'm trying to say is that the web pages are stored in the CD itself, not manually though. Just like any other files or programs in other CDs.

A search engine is needed to be made in order to search for web pages only, not other files such as text files.

The client requested we don't use a web server or database to search for desired web page/s in the CD.

Was thinking, maybe I could just make a search engine based on a flat file in java applet and the applet could be loaded on the internet browser.

But then, my manager said maybe can try researching php coz it also uses flat files. But I'm not sure how Php can get the web pages from the CD, just based on a flat file. Also, I'm wondering on how to load the desired web page/s on the browser.

So maybe can help give any good advice or suggestions..?

You could certainly setup a java applet to search through a CD ROM filesystem for files. If you want to serve webpages, the CD will have to be mounted on a system that has a web server installed. If you want to use PHP, you will obviously have to install it on the same machine that the CD ROM is in.

Are you trying to serve web pages to remote users, or just to the local user?

wah so fast... thanks again for ur prompt reply!

hmm.. looks like I will have to do my java applet for now. No point using Php since it needs a web server in order to work... I suppose without a web server, the processing will be faster.

It's targetted at local users since they will be the ones using the CD. Just search for web pages locally through the CD.

so only one alternative is using java applet? my friend suggested i could make an applet as a front to the Lucene search engine from Apache which can help index the files and search for local web pages.

Certainly java isn't the only way, you could do it with Batch Files if you wanted, or any other language your machine supports.
