storing files outside web tree

I'm sure this is here somewhere but I can't seem to find it. I have a few different pages and want to add some code to make it so a link on those pages will link to a file that is not in the web tree.

The path for my website is /home/www/ but I want to put the files in /home/files/ or something similar to that.

Any ideas?
