Displaying an image from MySql

I hope someone can help me with this as it's driving me mad. I'm relatively new to this, please let me explain what i'm trying to do.

I've stored details for people in a MySql database, this is displayed on a page inside table columns, at the top i'm trying to put their photo. What i've done so far is created the field as a varchar one, with the name of the photo as the date (photo.jpg) as an example. How do I call this and display the picture, what code should I be using, i've checked out loads of examples but can't seem to get eny of them working.

Where data[photo] should hold the 'photo.jpg' field. There needs to be a photo.jpg in the correct directory (under the document root) and it should work. If not, maybe you could post a code snippet of what you're trying to do.
