I am looking for a PHP chat software to install on my server.

Could anybody suggest me a nice one to download or buy ?

I would like to have a "light" software, easy to use and nice (emotions, images...) ...

How much resources do you think it will take from my server ?

Is a Java solution better ?

    Personally, i prefer Java, but that's since i like the applet / servlet approach. If you don't want to write a chat room yourself, it probably doesn't matter too much. I guess Java chatrooms are more likely to come without the need for a db, but that's just a feeling. There are both kinds for both PHP and Java
