how could I find how many days have passed since a date specified?

ie $days = <days since 10-10-2002>

The easiest way is to use mysql to_days() function

mysql> select to_days(now())-to_days("2002-08-12") as days;
+------+
| days |
+------+
|   40 |
+------+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)

mysql> select to_days(now())-to_days("2002-01-01") as days;
+------+
| days |
+------+
|  263 |
+------+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)

mysql> select to_days(now())-to_days("2001-04-13") as days;

|  526 |
+------+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)

mysql> select to_days("2002-10-10")-to_days(now()) as days;
